Paper Types:

IJMC publishes technical papers and reports in four broad categories:

1) Technical papers:  Full technical papers, providing details of metalcasting research, footnoted and referenced in traditional technical writing style.

2) Technical Development Report:  A shorter version of a full technical paper, the Technical Development Report describes work in progress, dealing with new areas of technology development and preliminary research that may not be advanced enough for a full technical paper. It is intended to keep industry appraised of new and breaking research in the field of metalcasting technology while that research is in progress and not yet completed. Both abstract and paper are required.

3) Technical Communication:  This feature, similar to a "a letter to the editor", allows readers to respond to a technical paper published in the journal, by submitting a reader response that further explores or expands the technology discussed in a published paper. The Technical Communication allows readers to interact with the authors to help stimulate further discussion and contribute to the direction of on-going research. Each reader response will be sent to the author of the original paper for review and comment.

4) Technical Update:  Publication of a technical paper in IJMC does not necessarily reflect the completion of the research that is the subject of the paper. The technical update provides follow-up material or additional data from the original author of a previously published research. The original paper will be summarized and clearly cited.

Submission Guidelines:

Potential authors should submit a completed "Offer of Paper" form, signifying the intent to submit a paper. This form also assigns AFS copyright approval and author's permission to publish the paper. All papers should be submitted electronically through the International Journal of Metalcasting website, CD-Rom or by email  at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . The Author's Guide, available on the IJMC website, provides details on format, submission, peer review and acceptance criteria.

All papers published in the IJMC will be approved only after a rigorous peer review process.  The editorial peer review board represents three international metalcasting groups: academia (metalcasting professors); science and research (personnel from national labs, research and scientific institutions); and industry (leading technical personnel from metalcasting facilities).

While all material appearing in the IJMC will published only after peer review approval, these different features are evaluated according to their intent and focus.

  • Technical Development Report will be reviewed for technical merit and content with an understanding that the concepts may not be fully developed since these are often reports on "Work-in-Progress".

  • Technical Communication will be evaluated based on technical merit, whether it enhances the technical discussion on the topic of the original paper, stimulates further discussion and has the potential to help researchers with future the direction of their work.

  • Technical Update will be evaluated for technical content and whether it enhances and expands the technical content of the original paper. Will be reviewed by IJMC Editorial Board members who evaluated original paper.
